How to remove an Audi steering wheel
Every modern Audi — A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q3/Q5/Q7/Q8, TT, e-tron and the S / RS versions. The method is the same across the range.
Why you'd do this
The common reasons: sending the wheel for a custom Alcantara or leather wrap, upgrading to a complete custom steering wheel, adding paddle shifter extensions, or fixing worn leather. Audi shares its steering hardware with VW, so the job is nearly identical to a Golf — about 30–45 minutes.
Tools you'll need
- M12 triple-square (XZN) bit — not a Torx; a Torx will strip the bolt
- Thin flat-blade screwdriver
- 10mm wrench for the battery terminal
- Torque wrench, masking tape, and a paint marker
Step 1 — Prep and disconnect the battery
- Park with the front wheels dead straight and the steering wheel centred.
- Switch the ignition to accessory mode before you cut power. Like VW, Audi's electronic steering lock clamps the column the moment the battery is disconnected with the car fully off — and you still need to turn the wheel to reach the airbag clips in the next step. Put the car in accessory/ACC mode (dash on, engine not running) first, then disconnect the negative battery terminal — it's in the trunk on many A4/A5s, under the hood on most A3s.
- Wait at least 15 minutes for the SRS capacitors to discharge.
Step 2 — Release the airbag module
Like VW, Audi retains the airbag with U-shaped wire spring clips reached through access holes in the back of the steering wheel — across the range they sit at roughly the 4 and 8 o'clock positions (behind the spokes on some wheels). The technique is the same whether it's an A1 or an RS6.
- Turn the wheel about 90° so the first hole rotates up to where you can comfortably reach it, insert the flat screwdriver about an inch, and lever the wire clip toward the centre of the wheel while gently pulling that side of the airbag — it will pop loose.
- Turn the wheel the other way and repeat on the opposite side, then return the wheel to centre. Flat-bottom S/RS wheels sometimes need the tool angled — work by feel, not force. Filing a small notch in the screwdriver tip stops it slipping off the wire.
- Ease the module forward — it's still wired in.
Step 3 — Disconnect the airbag wiring
- Rather than fighting the connectors on the back of the airbag itself, disconnect the airbag at the clock spring by removing the plug/connector on the column side — same trick as on a Golf, since they share the platform.
- On some wheels the button wiring is clipped to the airbag before it connects to the back of the buttons — unclip it and the airbag comes completely free.
- Unplug the horn connector, and note any extra connectors on wheels with heating or touch sensors.
- Set the module aside, pad facing up, away from heat.
Step 4 — Remove the centre bolt and mark alignment
- Mark the wheel hub and column shaft with paint or tape so the wheel goes back exactly where it was.
- Remove the M12 triple-square centre bolt, holding the wheel firmly as you crack it loose.
- Note how the paddle and horn wiring is routed.
Step 5 — Pull the wheel
- Rock the wheel off the splines toward you, feeding the wiring through the opening.
- Do not rotate the clock spring on the column. Tape it in position while the wheel is off — if it spins off-centre, its ribbon cable will break in use and the airbag light will stay on.
Reinstalling
- Wheels straight, clock spring centred, alignment marks lined up.
- Don't overtighten the centre bolt. Many Audi platforms use a torque-to-yield (stretch) bolt that must be replaced and set with a torque-angle spec — see the table below. That's firm, not gorilla-tight: like VW, these clock springs have plastic threads/mounts right behind the hub that crack if you lean on the bolt.
- Reconnect the airbag plug at the clock spring (and the button wiring if you unclipped it) until the locks click, then seat the module until both spring clips engage.
- Reconnect the battery with nobody in the car, switch on the ignition, and confirm the airbag light clears after its self-check. If it stays on, have the code read before driving.
Torque specs by model
Here's the important Audi difference: the factory spec for the B8/B8.5 (and several newer platforms) is a torque-to-yield bolt — 30 Nm plus a 90° (quarter) turn, using a new bolt each time. Many owners instead reuse the original bolt at ~50 Nm with blue thread-locker, which holds fine since the bolt only stops the wheel sliding off the splines. Both approaches are in the wild; the new-bolt-and-angle method is what Audi actually calls for.

B8/B8.5 figure per Alldata as reported on Audizine; owner practice varies. Because Audi mixes bolt types across the range, confirm the exact spec and whether a new bolt is required for your model before final torque.
Common problems
- Airbag / SRS light stays on afterward. Almost always a connector that isn't fully clicked in, or the battery was reconnected with a door open or someone in a seat. Reseat every airbag connector, reconnect the battery with the car empty, and cycle the ignition. If it's still lit, a fault code is stored and needs VCDS or a capable OBD scan tool to read and clear — don't drive on a lit SRS light.
- Horn doesn't work, or sounds by itself. The horn/ground contact isn't seated. Pull the module and make sure the horn connector engages properly.
- Wheel sits slightly off-centre going straight. It went back one spline over. Pull it and reposition to your alignment marks; don't chase it at the tie rods.
- Buttons, paddles, or cruise dead. A control connector or the clock-spring plug isn't fully seated — or the clock spring's ribbon was damaged by turning it off-centre. Recheck the plugs first.
- Clunk or notch when turning. Usually an off-centre clock spring or a wire pinched behind the wheel. Recheck before you keep driving.
