How to install MK7.5 tail lights on a MK7 Golf
Fitting EuroCustomAutos MK7.5 facelift LED tails to a North American halogen MK7 Golf or GTI.
Why this one is different
The good news: our MK7.5 lights come with everything you need in the box — the harness (just one yellow wire per side to run, far simpler than most other adapter harnesses) plus a reverse bridge wire and connectors so both reverse lights keep working. Because these are facelift (MK7.5) lights going onto a North American halogen MK7, the driver's side reverse circuit has to be repurposed into the amber turn signal, and the car then needs coding for the dynamic (sweeping) signals. That's the whole trick: one wire per side, one repin, tape off one pin, bridge the reverse, and code it.
Tools you'll need
- A repinning tool — a proper repin key set (about $10 online) is far easier than the two-sewing-needles trick and will pull pins on the first try
- A wire fish — the right tool for pulling the harness wire through the trunk-to-hatch channel (weed-trimmer line works in a pinch, but a proper fish is much easier)
- 8mm socket — for the inner tail lights
- Panel removal tool with a clip-removal tool — makes quick work of the trim and saves the "A" clips from breaking
- VCDS or OBDeleven — for coding
- Electrical tape (the reverse bridge wire and connectors come in the kit — see Step 5)
Step 1 — Run the included harness
Disconnect the negative battery terminal first. Then run the kit's yellow wires from the outer light to the inner light on each side — driver outer to driver inner, passenger outer to passenger inner.
- With our kit you don't need to pull the big cover off the hatch — the harness is small enough to feed through as-is.
- Use a wire fish to pull the wire through (weed-trimmer line works in a pinch), and massage the wire through the rubber boots between the body and the hatch rather than removing the boots.
- The inner tail lights come off with an 8mm socket; use the clip tool on the trim so the "A" clips don't snap.
Steps 2 & 3 — Repin the driver inner connector, tape off the outer
This is the one fiddly part. On the driver-side inner connector:
- Unclip the lock at the top of the connector. Insert the repin tool (or two sewing needles) into the holes on the top and bottom of the connector to release the purple/black wire in pin 4, and gently pull it out. It can take a few attempts.
- Move that same wire into pin 3 until it clicks, then press the locking tab back down. This converts the driver-side reverse circuit into the driver-side amber turn signal.
- Now go to the driver outer tail light, remove the wire from pin 4, and tape off the end — it's no longer used.
Step 4 — Code the car
Using VCDS or OBDeleven, code the rear lighting so the dynamic turn signals work and the LED lamp types are recognised. The installer's summary:
- Leuchte27 becomes your right turn signal
- Leuchte28 becomes your new left turn signal
- Leuchte20 and Leuchte21 are no longer turn signals
- Leuchte27 and Leuchte28 load type (Lasttyp) set to blinking-LED (#35)
- Leuchte20 and Leuchte21 load type (Lasttyp) set to braking-LED (#34)
In practice that means the brake lamps (20/21) become LED brake-only, and the former reverse/rear positions (27/28) become the left/right dynamic amber signals. While you're in there, set the tail/position lamps (Leuchte23/24) to general LED and confirm the reverse lamp (Leuchte29) is set correctly. Work through it channel by channel and test every function before buttoning up.
Coding values can vary slightly by car — verify each lamp works (tail, brake, both signals sweeping, reverse, fog) after coding. If you'd rather not, our coding service covers exactly this.
Step 5 — Restore both reverse lights
After the repin, only the passenger reverse light works. Our kit includes a reverse bridge wire and the connectors to bring the driver side back — no extra parts to buy and no splicing.
- Using the included bridge wire and connectors, link the right-side inner reverse lamp to the left-side inner reverse lamp. Both reverse lamps then run under Leuchte29, and your reversing camera keeps working.
- The bridge wire is already the right length and terminated, so it plugs straight in — just route it neatly across behind the trim.
Tips & common problems
- Buy the repin tool. The sewing-needle method works but is slow and frustrating — a $10 repin key set pulls the pin first try.
- Save your clips. A clip-removal tool keeps the "A" clips from getting stuck and breaking in the panels.
- Don't yank the boots. Massage the wire through the rubber body-to-hatch boots rather than pulling them out.
- Signal blinks fast or doesn't sweep. Recheck the pin 4 → pin 3 repin on the driver inner connector and the coding for Leuchte27/28 — a loose pin or a missed channel is the usual cause.
- Reverse light out on one side. Expected after the repin until you do Step 5 — bridge the inner reverse lamps with the included reverse bridge wire and connectors.
- Bulb-out warning in the cluster. A lamp's load type (Lasttyp) wasn't set to the LED value — go back through the coding.
- Condensation inside a light. A little clears on its own; standing water means a bad seal and the light should be swapped.
