MK7 vs MK7.5 vs MK8 — which Golf is my car?
Model years for North America, how to tell the generations apart, and which parts fit which Golf.
Model years at a glance (North America)
| Generation | Model years (NA) | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| MK7 | 2015–2017 | Golf, GTI, Golf R, GTD, e-Golf |
| MK7.5 (facelift) | 2018–2021 | GTI, Golf R, GTI Performance |
| MK8 | 2022–2024 | GTI, Golf R (incl. 2023 Golf R) |
| MK8.5 (facelift) | 2025+ | GTI, Golf R |
European model years differ slightly — the table above is for North American cars. When in doubt, go by your VIN, not the badge.
How to tell them apart at a glance
- MK7 (2015–2017) — halogen or xenon lighting, physical climate knobs, analog gauge cluster on most trims. Tail lights are halogen on North American cars.
- MK7.5 (2018–2021) — the facelift. Full-LED head and tail lights, refreshed bumpers, larger infotainment screen. Same platform as the MK7, which is why so many parts interchange.
- MK8 (2022–2024) — all-new interior with the digital cockpit and touch-slider controls, new body, new lighting design. Very little carries over from the MK7 family.
- MK8.5 (2025+) — facelifted MK8: updated bumpers, revised lighting with startup animation on Euro-spec tails, and updated infotainment.
What that means for parts fitment
- MK7 ↔ MK7.5: most interior, steering, and mechanical parts interchange. Lighting does not — the facelift changed the head and tail lights. (The popular exception: our MK7 / 7.5 dynamic Euro tail lights cover both, and we have a full guide to fitting MK7.5 tails on a halogen MK7.)
- MK7 family ↔ MK8: almost nothing interchanges. Match parts to your generation — our MK8 Euro tail lights and MK8.5 Euro tail lights are separate products for a reason.
- Universal-fit items: steering wheel wraps, custom boots, paddle shifters, and ECA Forged wheels are made to order for your exact car, so generation matters less — we spec them to your vehicle.
Not sure which one you have? Every product listing names the generation and years it fits, and every order is covered by our fitment guarantee. Send us your year, model, and trim — we'll confirm before anything ships.
